For this reason, the gentleman
Remains silent rather than makes noise;
Shows ineptitude rather than displays a skill.

ば、たちまち非難にさらされる。
十回作戦を立てて九回成功させたとしても
功績を認められるとは限らない。一回でも
失敗すれば、たちまち批判を浴びる。
君子が多弁よりも沈黙を選び、さかしらより
も無能をよそおうのは、そのためである。
●多弁なるが故に失敗した例は枚挙にいと
まがない。「老子」には「多言なれば、しばしば
窮す」とあり、「荘子」にも、「大弁は言わず」と
ある。孔子も、「君子は弁舌がさわやかである
よりも、実践において勇敢でありたい」（論語）
と多弁の愚を戒めている。
