Being of high rank but not loving the people –
This is a thief wearing ceremonial robes.
Lecturing on learned subjects but not giving proper
respect to putting them into action –
This is Zen of the mouth alone.
Performing great achievements but giving no thought
to the seeds of virtue for the future –
This is only flowers blooming and withering right
before your eyes.

「役に立たないもの」
書物を読んでも、聖賢の心に触れなければ、
文字の奴隷にすぎない。官吏となっても、民
衆をいつくしまなければ、禄盗人にすぎない。
学問を教えても、みずから実行しなければ、
口先だけの学問にすぎない。事業を興しても
人々のためになることを考えなければ、つかの
間の徒花に終わってしまう。
●ときには初心にたちかえって、「なんのために」
という目的をもう一度確認してみる必要がある。
