A man both strict and severe,
Will many times be loathed by those more self-

質素な人は派手好きな人から煙たがれる。
厳しい人はだらしのない人から嫌がられる。
だからといって、いささかも自分の信念を曲げ
てはならないが、同時に、それをむき出ないこ
とが望まれるのである。これが君子の生き方
だ。
●孔子も、「君子は和して同ぜず」(論語）、
つまり、協調性に富むが無原則な妥協は
しない、と語っている。確固とした信念を
持たなければ、独立した人格とは言えない。
だが、それをむやみに人に推しつけないところ
に、君子の君子たるゆえんがある。
