Man, with simply one thought of greed,
Will melt away his strength and transform it into
weakness,
Will obstruct his wisdom and create ignorance,
Will change kindness into cruelty,
Will stain the pure and produce the tarnished,
And so will completely destroy the character of his entire
life.
Therefore the ancients
Considered the lack of greed to be a gem,
And thus did they transcend the everyday world.

「無欲こそ宝である」
私利私欲の追及に走ったらどうなるか。剛直は
骨抜きとなり、明知はくらまされ、愛情は残酷
にかわり、潔白は泥まみれとなり、あたら一生
を台なしにしてしまうにちがいない。
だから古人は、「無欲こそ宝」と言い切ったのだ。
このことばこそ俗世間を超越する道である。
●春秋時代、宋の国に司城子かんという重信
がいた。ある人から玉を献上されたとき、「わしは
かねてから無欲こそ宝だと信じている。そんなわし
に玉をくれたところで、せっかくの宝が宝でなくな
ってしまうだけだ」といって断ったという。ここでいう
古人とはこの子かんを指している。たしかに、欲に
走るとろくなことはない。「近子録」にも、「欲あれ
ば則ち剛なし」とある。
