Where the water is clean, there are never any fish.
Therefore, the gentleman

He should not hold onto the total chastity of only
loving the pure and going his own way.

【日本語翻訳版】

「水清ければ魚すまず」

汚い土には作物が育ち、澄みきった水には
魚もすまない。

汚いものをあえて受け入れる度量を持って
こそ君子と言える。

独りよがりの潔癖は避けるべきだ。

●水清ければ魚すまずーこれに類することばは昔
からことわざのように使われているらしい。『孔子
家語」その他の書に、「水至って清ければ則ち魚
なし。人至って察なれば則ち徒なし」とある。後段
のくだりは、あまりこまかい所まで目がとどきすぎると
人が寄ってこなくなる、という意味である。
