If the song-and-dance girl latches onto a good man
in her latter years,
The rouge and flowers of her former life will be no
obstacle at all.
If the chaste wife lets down her guard after her gray hairs
have begun to show,
The purity and work of half a life together come to naught.
The proverb says,
“In scanning of the life of a man, only at the latter
half of his years."
This is truly a wise saying.

「人の値打ちは後半生で」
芸姑でも、晩年に身を固めて貞操な妻になれば、
むかしの浮いた暮らしは少しも負い目にならない。
貞操な妻でも、白髪になって操を破れば、それま
での苦労がすべて水の泡になる。
諺にも、「人の値打ちは後半生できまる」とあるが
まったくそのとおりだ。
●「詩経」に、「初めあらざることなく，よく終わり
あることすくなし」ということばがある。初めは誰で
もうまくいくが、それを終わりまで持続させる者は
すくないという意味だ。晩節を全うすることはむず
かしい。だからこそ、後半生の生き方で、その人の
値打ちがきまってくるのである。
